News - Autumn 2017

The summer of 2017 has been one of mixed fortunes for Coleshill Cricket Club. Our League team suffered the loss of several good players before and during the season and therefore throughout the season was struggling with availability. With two matches to go as these notes are written, Coleshill are at the foot of the Division 2 League table, in spite of improved form in recent weeks. A lot of credit goes to Dominic Spencer, who has held the side together in difficult circumstances and turned in some impressive individual performances.

On the other hand, our Colts section has gone from strength to strength, winning matches against much larger clubs than ours. Guy Cornelius and his fellow coaches have made the Sunday morning coaching sessions a delight to watch, and are planning to be teaching cricket to no fewer than 100 boys and girls during the 2018 season.

At Committee level, the focus is now on two critical issues. The first is recruitment of players, since we must rebuild our playing strength for the season ahead. We shall greatly appreciate any help from the Village in this regard. If there are cricketers among your family, friends or work colleagues who would like to play for Coleshill, do please let me know. The second issue is to decide the format of cricket which the club should play in the future, since it appears that League matches of 100 overs duration are no longer popular, and one of the causes of our lack of players. We shall be seeking solutions to these two challenges in the weeks ahead.

Finally, our partnership with Jordans Taverners during the 2017 season has been most successful. We hope they have enjoyed playing their cricket at Coleshill as much as we have enjoyed hosting them, and we look forward to continuing this pleasant relationship in seasons ahead.

In all other respects, our club is doing very well. The ground has never looked better than at the start of this season, and this is a reflection of the fine work being done by Steve Edwards on the square and on the outfield.

Our partnership with Jordans Taverners Cricket Club has got off to an excellent start. Now that they are playing their cricket at Coleshill, it means that there is cricket at the Jack Adams Field on Sundays as well as Saturdays. They have contributed some valuable equipment to the club, and the additional fixtures being played at Coleshill mean greater revenue for our bar. We are very confident that this partnership will bring lasting benefit to both clubs.
