News - Spring 2018

Our next major event is our ANNUAL DINNER, which will be held at the Village Hall on Friday, 23rd March at 8 pm. We shall be repeating the very successful format of last year, namely a two course Sri Lankan dinner. Tickets are available from Stephen Inchbald, at a cost of £27.

The main issue facing the Cricket Club is a shortage of adult players, and the adult section of the Club is at a critical stage. The average age of our players is over 40, and we have fewer than five players under 30, and they are only occasionally available.

On the other hand, we have a thriving Colts section, but naturally they are too young to play adult cricket. We need to retain these youngsters to secure the future of the Club, and to do this we need to provide enhanced practice facilities. Our current nets have reached the end of their useful life. They were very generously donated by Mr & Mrs Livesey, but the playing surface is now dangerous, the run up is too short and the follow through is an injury risk. We can purchase new nets of a high standard, and they could be fitted within six weeks, but the cost is £30,000. We are applying for grants, and held an information meeting at the Red Lion in February. Resulting from that meeting, and from letters written to potential supporters, we have received some extremely generous donations and pledges, but we still have some way to go.

These are tough times for village cricket clubs but the objective of our Committee is to ensure that Coleshill Cricket Club continues to be the friendly place it has always been, blessed with a most attractive ground, and returning to the playing strength we had a few years ago. This is what makes it so important that we attract new adult players and enhance our facilities. Any support we can attract from the Village will be immensely valuable.
